The Giro d'Italia returns to Breuil-Cervinia.
Penultimate stage of the twenty-one program of this Giro d'Italia with 214 kilometers of route, the Susa - Breuil-Cervinia will surely be one of the most challenging with 4,500 meters in altitude in only 3 climbs. The riders will have to face the 1,623 meters of the Col Tsecore and the 1,664 of the Col de Saint-Panthaléon before reaching the 2,001 of Cervinia.
This 20th stage, has a marathon mileage and a really insidious up and down that can reserve many surprises.
After the Piedmont stretch, continue in the Valle d'Aosta valley, between mountains, castles, and splendid views.
The difficulties of the stage are concentrated however in the last 100 km, in which there will be no breath with the climbs of Col Tsecore, Saint-Pantaléon and Breuil-Cervinia, where the Matterhorn, which stands at the bottom of Valtournenche, awaits majestic arrival of runners.
The stages in the mountains are the main feature of the Giro d'Italia. In fact, they have a very high average slope (with peaks that sometimes exceed 20%) which does not always go to the detriment of the length; this makes them different from the stages of the Tour, and extremely hard: the mountain stages of the Giro d'Italia test the best climbers in the world, which, by tradition, are almost the only ones who manage to win the Corsa Rosa.
The cycling history of Cervinia is short but of great quality; there were four arrivals up here.
In '60 the stage went to Aldo Kazianka. In '97 with an attack on the Saint Pantaléon Ivan Gotti overturned the fate of the race, removing the pink shirt to Tonkov and bringing it until the arrival.
In 2012 the victory was of Andrey Amador with a flight from afar, but the blow to Cervinia scored him especially Ryder Hesjedal. The Canadian in general indifference gained a handful of seconds that later at the end of the Giro proved decisive for his pink jersey. In 2015, after six and a half hours of the race, Fabio Aru was the winner of the 19th stage of Gravellona Toce-Cervinia.
The day after the stage in Cervinia, the grand finale of the 101st edition of the Giro d'Italia with the "walkway" in Rome on 27 May 2018.
